The traditional floral symbol of China, the state flower of Indiana, and the 12th wedding anniversary flower, peonies are known as the flower of riches and honor. With their lush, full, rounded bloom, peonies embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage.

Peonies are native to Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America. There are about 40 known species of Peonies. Here is a list of 10 gorgeous peonies from around the world.

Scientific Name: Paeonia officinalis

Common Names: European peony or common peony

Native to: Europe in Spain, northern Portugal and southern France, Italy, Switzerland, western Romania and the Balkan peninsula.

Description: Flowers are fragrant and bowl-shaped measuring 10–13 cm (4–5 in) in diameter.

Colors: deep pink or deep red

Native to: Balearic Islands of the Mediterranean

  8. Oh, so these are what peonies look like. No wonder it's a favorite for those watercolor wreaths that are so popular right now. I don't know much about flowers, just roses and tulips and sunflowers haha, guess it shows since it's my first time seeing peonies in photos.

  21. I only know about Chinese Peonies. I even thought Peonies are an exclusively Chinese flower, turns out they are found all over the world. The color of that Greek peony is exquisite.
